DIY Baladi/Saidi Dress Class with Alia Saeed
1st hour pattern making, 2nd hour construction
The baladi dress is a staple in any Middle Eastern dancer’s wardrobe as it used in the many styles of Egyptian folkloric dancing. Baladi dresses vary from simple to customized designs to reflect a dancers individual style and personality, and can be surprisingly easy to make!In class you will learn how to create a pattern using a t-shirt and simple measuring skills as well as sleeve and neckline variations. In the second hour of the class we will focus on the construction the dress, fitting and alternations.This will be a basic skills sewing class, friendly to all levels from beginner to advanced!
Materials Needed:
Pattern:
Long-sleeve shirt: a loosely fitted t-shirt works best as we will use this to make our pattern
Measuring tape (if you don’t have a measuring tape, yarn or thick string will work as well)
Marking Instruments: marker/tailor's chalk
Drafting paper - if you don’t have drafting paper, brown paper bags from the grocery store and wrapping paperwork works well too!
Sewing:
3 yards of Stretch Fabric - a good four-way stretch works best! (If you aren’t sure if your fabric will work or if you have enough, feel free to reach out to Alia and she can help you determine if your fabric will work!)
