at Studio A Dance in Los Angeles, CA.

In this workshop we will explore what makes Afghan dance "Afghan" and break down some basic Afghan dance vocabulary, including how to keep rhythm in the body while using storytelling elements expressed in the upper body. We will also explore Afghan regalia and highlight cultural considerations. While we will not have time to learn choreography, you will learn a few combinations that can be used in your own creations. If time permits, you will also learn a few basic "attan" movements - the famous Afghan communal circle dance that has existed for centuries in numerous regional variations. Please keep in mind that there is no "pure" Afghan dance and there is still a lot more to explore and uncover for these dance forms that are celebrated yet poorly documented or preserved.
Samia Karimi is a dance artist, teaching artist and choreographer who immigrated to the U.S. from Afghanistan at the age of 5. Her curiosity to reconnect with her culture brought her to the Bay Area where she trained, performed and choreographed with Ballet Afsaneh since 2015, under the artistic directorship of Sharlyn Sawyer as well as performing with Nava Dance Collective under the directorship of Miriam Peretz. Although Samia entered the dance world as a belly dancer, she was drawn to Central Asian dance forms given her ethnic roots.. She has performed at numerous private and community events as well as several Afghan music videos and is currently exploring dance and film. In the Bay area, Samia ran DanceVersity World Dance for Youth and also worked with Luna Dance Institute - teaching creative dance to children. Samia envisions a world where dance is celebrated as an art form everywhere and hopes to dive deeper into the dance ethnology of Afghanistan within the context of Central Asia.
